A very ancient prayer, the Pentecost Sequence, opens with the following words; Come Holy Spirit come, and from your celestial home shed a ray of light Divine.

     ....a ray of light Divine

Friends, there is nothing in our human efforts that can even come close to God "shedding a ray of light Divine" upon us.  There is a place for human effort, a time to work hard, think hard, study hard....but a moment of Divine revelation overshadows it all.

Please don't think your efforts can replace the work of grace.

Only when we see the limits of human effort, only when we acknowledge our poverty, can we say with authenticity
"Come Holy Spirit, come"
